True Leadership

May 31, 2018

Greek philosopher, Aristotle, years ago said that the best way to teach character is by modeling a good example. Children are like sponges, they observe everything. Our children may not always listen to what we tell them but they will always be watching what we do. Throughout life, I have come across people who have frowned upon my lifestyle simply because I am a mother. Whether I work too much, travel too much, network too much or even not do enough of something, there will always be someone who you will not satisfy. So I decided a while ago that I am going to do what I want, as long as I know that I am leading by example. Motherhood is a very complex yet rewarding role and sometimes juggling it all can be a bit overwhelming. Catherine seems to have great insight on motherhood. Her story of resiliency and grace as definitely inspired me and even taught me a few things.

Catherine is a mother to three amazing children who she loves dearly. After the financial crisis, her family lost it all. During a time when most would fall apart, Catherine kept it all together for the sake of her children and I invite you to listen to her full story below. She wanted to keep a perfect world for them so they wouldn't suffer. On top of all the financial hardships, she was dealing with a separation but they made the decision to remain separated under the same roof. Somehow through it all, they managed to put their differences aside and live amicably. So instead of remembering heartache and struggle through the difficult times, her children remember unity and love. Today her ex-husband and she are best friends. What an exceptional way to model to her children.

Catherine is such a phenomenal woman who practices what she preaches. She is a retirement planner with New York Life Insurance Company, co-author of Latina Empowerment Through Leadership, very much involved in her community and continues to makes a huge impact on women lives. From providing financial tools to empowering them to be independent, you name it, she does it. Catherine's motto has been, leaders lead by example and she is a great representation of that. Her children get to see that firsthand at home and are following mommies footsteps with their own philanthropical work.

Most people are petrified of failing in life, but a true leader understands that “every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit” (Napoleon Hill). Authentic leaders lead themselves first. Life does not come with a manual and even through all the experiences I have been through, I still do not have it completely figured out. Just know that trying to balance personal, family, and career life will change as priorities change. One thing I do know for certain is that balance is not something you find it's something you create. Being a mother has been the most rewarding job that has given me the greatest sense of joy. Remember leadership is not a position of a title it is action and example.
