God's Child

Mother Theresa says that “Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway.” Being open as air rids all insecurities and transparency always wins hearts, Jaqueline won my heart when she bared it all. We had met about a year before I had asked her to be a part of my campaign and stayed in touch throughout the year. I knew she and I shared one thing in common, we were both pregnant at sixteen. I thought I knew her story but realized there was so much more to it when we actually sat down and connected.

Jaqueline refused to be a teenage pregnancy statistic; she graduated high school and went off to beauty school. She had many things to look forward to and finally got the courage to leave an 8-year toxic relationship. Even though she felt great she admits, "fear ruled [her] heart when it came down to love and [her] decision to let go and move forward." During this period, she also lost her father to cancer. She did not allow this to stop her, she kept pushing and even managed to make a break in the modeling industry career for five years.

In 2012, her life changed in an instant after a tragic accident, life has a way of doing that. The injuries from the accident were not minor, it resulted in a hairline fracture in the neck, split liver, shattered diaphragm, broken pelvis, no movement of her legs and internal bleeding. In my experience, I believe God speaks to us by completely shaking our world. Everything she had worked so hard to build she lost. Jaqueline was in shock and recalls thinking, "It was all taken from me in a blink of an eye. No more being a hairdresser, no more modeling. I was now confined to 4 walls, tied down to a hospital bed and a wheelchair all overnight!"

At the moment you do not realize it but every trial you go through makes us stronger. James 1: 2-3 says: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Through the trials, we gain endurance and our perspective on life changes. During her year of solitude, she experienced the most trials. There were moments where she had to drag herself to the restroom because no one was around to help her. She had minimal contact with others and felt alone.

Learning to walk again was difficult and a huge accomplishment for Jaqueline but she was a little discouraged because she had a huge limp and a hunched back. Doctors advised her, her chances of walking normal again were slim to none. She refused to let that be her truth she states "I’ve learned that I am not what happened to me, I AM the author of my story, the captain of my ship and I dictate what way my boat sails. She knew God gave her that trail because she was strong enough to endure it and more importantly, it gave her a mission. Her mission is to share her story and be a walking testimony of the wonders that God can do through Jesus Christ.

Today Jaqueline is fulfilling her mission and an inspiration to many women. She is a successful owner of a micro-blading business that has been featured on Telemundo and is teaching other women how to earn a six-figure income while keeping God in the center of her life. She is living proof that with God anything is possible. Jaqueline lives her life knowing that "no matter how low [she] falls, [her] get back up game is super strong". That is that exact attitude we all need to have. Don't be afraid to go out there and follow the vision that God gave you. Remember everyone may not understand it because God gave YOU the vision.

For some reason this New Year’s feels different, maybe a large part of it is because I am no longer the woman that I was before. By no means am I saying I am perfect but I am constantly working on myself and have learned to surrender to God and understand that no matter how much I want to be in control, His plan is always better.

The best part of this journey has been meeting phenomenal “hurt” women and watching their growth. Nothing makes my soul happier than seeing women not allow their circumstances to define them! Veronica De Leon is a beast! She inspires me every day to keep going
